The Medicinal Qualities of Marijuana
Evidence of the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes goes back at least 3500 years. The medicinal qualities of marijuana have been known and appreciated by almost every world culture at some point, from the ancient Egyptians up to the present day. In recent years, rigorous scientific studies have confirmed that many of the cannabinoid compounds found in the cannabis plant do indeed provide valuable therapeutic effects for a host of different ailments.
Despite a long-lasting and unjustified governmental intolerance toward the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes (or for any other reason), we are beginning to come out of the dark ages. Sixteen states, including New Mexico, now sanction the use of medical marijuana and have begun to recognize the medicinal qualities of marijuana. While more conservative elements of society continue to take a hard-line stance against marijuana use, the evidence is incontrovertible—cannabis has undeniable therapeutic value.
When traditional medical therapies prove ineffectual, medical cannabis is a proven treatment for:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Appetite stimulation in chemotherapy and AIDS patients
- Glaucoma, by lowering intraocular pressure
- Chronic, persistent pain due to any number of conditions
- Muscle spasticity
- Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Severe anorexia
- Gastrointestinal disorders such as Crohn’s Disease
- And many others
